The Perfect Scent (A true story)
The Emperor of Scent (A true story) A Separate Creation Foreign Editions |
|
Book Titles. We went through numerous possible titles. My personal favorite
for a while was "The Heretic of the Senses," which my
friend Nicole thought up in a bar in SoHo, but some of my friends
said "People won't know what a 'heretic' is...." My agent,
Eric Simonoff, favored "A New Theory of Smell" in the
sense that, as he noted, it says exactly what the book is about,
but he acknowledged its downside, a) it misses the entire perfume
half of everything and b) it's boring. Luca suggested "Music
Smells Green" since, if his Vibration theory is right, we see
color vibrations, smell scent vibrations, and hear sound vibrations,
and several of my friends liked it, but it was a bit too abstract.
"The Perfume Genius" was too.... something for Scott,
who doesn't like the word "genius." Luca then suggested
"Smelling Secret Harmonies," and which he adapted from
Shakespeare. A bit artsy. I came up with "The Emperor of Smell,"
and Scott modified it to "The Emperor of Scent." |
